Nutritional deficiencies

Micro-nutrients are vital in the cultivation of cucumbers as they are very sensitive to low soil availability of microelements such as Iron, Boron or Manganese. Micronutrients influence fruit colour and other important quality factors of cucumber.

Cucumber plants have a high demand of Boron and there is a very narrow margin between deficiency and excess of this element. Boron is transported mainly in the xylem vessels and is therefore not transported from the old to the new leaves. A continuous uptake of boron is essential in order to make normal plant development possible. Fruit growth can be severely affected by boron deficiency, leading to fruit necrosis and deformation.

Iron deficiency is most likely to occur in alkaline or limy soils and may be induced by an excess of lime, deficient drainage or a high concentration of metal ions in the soil or nutritive solution. High Mn concentrations may induce iron deficiency. Iron deficiency symptoms show as interveinal chlorosis in the youngest leaves.

Manganese deficiency provoques a pale green or yellow colouring between the nerves of the leaves which remain green. Similar to Iron the lack of Manganese is most probable in alkaline or limy soils whereas it is easily available in acid soils.

Main solutions and special recommendations for cucumber nutrition offered by Tradecorp:

Product Solution
Efficient rooting solution and stimulating for root growth. Ruter AA guarantees the development of the plants during the first phases of cultivation thanks to its content of macro-nutrients, essential micro-nutrients and physiologically active L-α-amino acids with an anti-stress effect in adverse climatic situations.

General recommendation:
Fertirrigation and application to the soil: 6 – 10 l/ha per application. Several applications at transplanting, during the first phases of cultivation and during the cultivation cycle at critical moments should be done.
