Nutritional deficiencies
Micro-nutrients are vital for adequate melon nutrition in given that melons are very sensitive to the low availability of certain nutrients such as Boron, Iron, Calcium and Molybdenum in the soil.
In the case of Boron the first symptoms of deficiency appear in the young leaves that show a pale colour on the leaf edges at the apex of the plant. Growth is also reduced as the development of the terminal bud is affected. Deficiency in the fruit is characterized by a loss of taste and therefore a decrease in quality.
Like all members of the cucurbitaceae family melon are especially sensitive to Molybdenum deficiency. The deficiency can be recognized by chlorosis showing between the nerves of the older leaves. If the deficiency is not treated light brown necrotic edges gradually develop, the leaves curl downwards and the plant stops growing. Low pH in the soil and the presence of Manganese, Iron and Aluminium Oxides favour the insolubility of Molybdenum and the appearance of deficiency symptoms.
Melons are also sensitive to Magnesium deficiency of, which can be recognized by the chlorotic stains between the nerves of older leaves.
Calcium deficiency leads to the appearance of vitrescence of the fruit and reduces firmness and shelf life of melon, fundamental parameters for quality. Vitrescence is the appearance of vitreous areas of parts of the fruit flesh during maturity and appears especially in sensitive varieties like cantaloupe melon. In the event of serious deficiency, blossom-end rot may appear.
