Nutritional deficiencies
Strawberries belong to the group of crops that has a high demand of certain micro-elements such as Iron, Manganese, Zinc and Boron. These are necessary for most of the metabolic processes of the plant.
Iron is the micro-element that has the highest level of concentration in the fruit and all other plant organs. Iron deficiency causes reduction in performance and fruit abortion. The first sign of Iron deficiency is the yellowing of the leaves between the nerves. As the deficiency becomes more serious, the yellow colour of the leaves intensifies and then the leaves turn brown.
Boron and Zinc have a direct effect on the fruit quality. Deficiency of these elements decreases pollen fertility and decreases fruit set. Boron in combination with Molybdenum is important for a balanced content of vitamin C and sugars in the fruit.
Strawberries need a high content of Calcium during fruit development and especially for fruit quality and shelf life. Correct Calcium nutrition improves the firmness of the strawberries and their resistance to transport. Calcium deficiency can be recognized by terminal leaf necrosis, or tip burn, in periods of rapid growth.
