Nutritional deficiencies
Micronutrients play essential roles in a multitude of metabolic processes in the plant (photosynthesis, synthesis of proteins, enzymatic processes, and so on) and are therefore essential nutrients of sweet pepper, chillies and hot pepper crops. Deficiencies of Iron, Manganese, Boron and Zinc appear frequently in intensive production systems if these elements are not applied regularly.
Peppers are very sensitive to Magnesium deficiency. As Magnesium is a fundamental element of chlorophyll the symptoms appear as chlorotic stains in the interveinal area of the basal leaves. If the deficiency is severe the chlorosis will intensify and necrotic areas will appear on the leaves. The Fruit size will decrease, lowering the total production. Fruit quality will be equally affected.
Blossom-end rot is caused by Calcium deficiency during fruit development. The physiological disorder is caused either by low Calcium content of the soil, drought stress, high temperatures or high humidity. It is characterized by the appearance of a necrotic stain close to the blossom end of the fruit, which can lead to secondary infection by bacteria or fungi. The affected fruit will mature prematurely.
